Real-World Engineering vs. Automated Purity Tests

Automated “leetcode” style coding assessments are a horrible way to judge developer skills. I share my own Crossover profile below to illustrate.

Crossover Test Results: 99th Percentile Cognitive Aptitude, Average/Entry Coding
  • Cognitive Aptitude: 99th Percentile. Certifiably nerd smart.
  • Education: Graduated with a high GPA in CS from BYU while providing for a family and working full time. No simple task.
  • Experience: 25 years of hands-on experience building real-world apps. Proficient in 15+ languages. Written millions of lines of code in each.
  • Leadership: 15 years founding and running a dev shop that generated $15 million+ in revenue over its lifetime in billable software projects.
  • Architecture: Architected 100s of platforms, apps, and databases. Deep AWS sysops knowledge of running platforms in the real world.
  • Mentorship: Mentored and trained 100+ developers.

But according to these automated coding assessments, I am a "below average" developer.

Making someone program from memory with no internet or AI, in a clunky online IDE, is testing the wrong things. So many amazing developers can't get jobs because they can't pass the AI filters or LeetCode purity tests. Building real software is about architecture, product sense, problem-solving, and utilizing all available tools to deliver value.

This is exactly why I am building PocketCloud. I believe solo developers, small agile teams, and highly technical PMs—the future "AI Orchestrators" and "AI Shepherds"—will become the new builders. PocketCloud is designed for people like this: giving them the power, tools, and local inference to build massive platforms without arbitrary gatekeeping.

Founder & Chief Engineer

PocketCloud | Utah, United States

I’m the founder of Clever Coding and the creator of PocketCloud, an open-source, local-first AI platform designed to help people run private AI on their own hardware.

PocketCloud is built around AI sovereignty: your data, your models, your device, your rules. The platform starts with Apple Silicon and is expanding across Linux, Unix, and Windows. It brings together local inference, hybrid AI routing, developer tooling, observability, Swift-native apps, and practical starter applications for building real private AI experiences.

After years of building custom software, mobile apps, cloud systems, and AI-enabled products through Clever Coding, I’m now focused on launching PocketCloud as a foundation for developers, small businesses, creators, and communities who want powerful AI without surrendering privacy, ownership, or control.

Sep 2024 – Present

Founder & Chief Engineer, PocketMind (iOS)

Utah, United States

Designed and built PocketMind v1.0, a native local AI assistant. Established initial abstractions for on-device prompt formatting, model caching, and private vector store indexing.

View Detailed Achievements
  • Built PocketMind, an on-device AI assistant for iOS supporting Llama 3.2, Phi 3.1 Mini, and Gemma 2 2B Instruct.
  • Implemented dynamic switching between local and cloud models, supporting OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google Gemini APIs.
  • Developed session memory, customizable model selection, and secure API key management for users.
  • Used MLX and Llama.cpp for native iOS inference, optimizing local model responsiveness and user privacy.
  • Led full lifecycle: architecture → design → deployment → marketing, achieving strong adoption and feedback.

VP of Engineering

Nerd | Lehi, Utah, United States

I joined Nerd as the ~200th hire, but just weeks later, 60 employees were let go as the startup began the slow burn of running out of cash. Knowing the odds, I only hired a small, highly capable team focused on raw talent and execution. I held that core team together down to the last 20 employees before being forced to resign over unpaid wages—prompting the rest of the leadership team to follow within weeks.

Despite the ship burning down around us, my team successfully delivered the first purely Web3 app to come out of Nerd, which is still being used by all 12 supported blockchains today.

Chief Executive Officer

Clever Coding | Lehi, Utah

Founded Clever Coding, a development-for-hire agency. Helped project architect, manage, code, and launch hundreds of apps over 15 years. Over the life of the company, I employed 100+ W2 employees, serving as the primary project manager on most projects and achieving a peak gross yearly revenue of over $2 million.

My biggest skill is getting projects built and launched. To enable an easier and more streamlined workflow, we created a custom project management, time keeping and invoicing solution to run the company.

To enable rapid development of new projects, we developed the "Starter App" which is a base platform with a web app (Vue/Nuxt/Node/Express) and an iOS App (Swift+Hybrid) and Android App (Kotlin+Hybrid). This product allowed us to jump start new projects while significantly reducing total development cost and time for our clients.

  • Helped architect, develop and manage 100's of apps for clients all over the world.
  • Advanced skills in iOS (Swift and Objective-C), Android (Kotlin and Java), Vue/Nuxt/Node/Express.
  • Managed our AWS account with server management and configuration.
  • Helped architect and managed 20+ projects that were large complex platforms involving a cloud base API, web frontend, iOS and Android Apps, each project representing thousands of hours.
  • Architected the DB and API for 50+ projects.
  • Had 5+ complex projects that interacted with companion bluetooth hardware.
  • Experienced in a wide range of technologies and a wide range of types of apps created.
  • Designed and coded multiple complex social media platforms.
  • Created a wide variety of apps across multiple industries including business, entertainment, social, utilities, legal and medical.
